A free remove.bg alternative for product photos
remove.bg says its service is moving into Canva (details below). Its free tier is for small images. Its own help page says it's free "for low-resolution images (up to 0.25 megapixels)" and personal use; full resolution and commercial use need a plan or credits. If you sell online, you usually need both. Here's a free way to get full-size cut-outs, and when a paid tool is still worth it.
remove.bg is moving into Canva
remove.bg's help pages say the service is migrating into Canva. News reports say the standalone website, apps, plugins and self-serve API stop on 1 December 2026 and that pay-as-you-go credits expire then, with API customers pointed to Leonardo. Check remove.bg's own notices for your account. If you used remove.bg for product photos, our free tool below does full-size cut-outs in your browser, with a white square layout for Google Shopping.

What 0.25 megapixels means for a store
0.25 megapixels is about 500 × 500 pixels. That's below what most stores use for zoomable product photos. For example, Shopify says 2048 × 2048 usually displays best for square product images. A free download at that size works for a thumbnail but looks soft on a product page.
The free alternative
Our free background remover runs the cut-out inside your browser:
- Full size: it keeps your photo's resolution, up to 5,000 pixels on the long side.
- No watermark, no account and no limit on photos.
- In your browser: the photo stays on your computer. Only the cut-out model downloads, once. Older computers can choose a free server cut-out instead; that photo isn't stored.
- Store-ready output: transparent PNG, or a white-background JPG squared up with the product filling about 85% of the frame.
- Up to 20 photos at a time, with "Download all".
The trade-offs: the first photo downloads the model (110 to 215 MB, once), and the in-browser product cut-out needs a computer whose browser can use the graphics card (recent Chrome or Edge, or Safari 26). On older computers the page offers a free server cut-out instead.
Google's new image size rule (31 January 2027)
Google Merchant Center has announced that product images must be at least 500 × 500 pixels from 31 January 2027, and recommends 1500 × 1500 or more. A cut-out on a white, square canvas made from your original photo keeps its full size, so it clears the new minimum as long as the original photo does.

When paying is still worth it
- You process hundreds of photos a week and speed matters more than cost (Canva, Leonardo or another paid service).
- You need an API that runs from your store or app. (Ours isn't built yet. Join the waitlist if you want one.)
- You have hard images, such as hair against a busy background or clear glass, and want a tool with manual touch-up brushes.
How to make a white-background product photo for Google Shopping
- Open the free background remover and drop in your photos.
- Pick White, tick Square, and choose JPG.
- Check the edges, then press Download all.
- Upload the new photos as your main product images. Keep them free of watermarks, promo text and borders.
