Free barcode generator and GTIN check digit calculator

Type a GTIN, UPC or EAN to check its check digit, or leave the last digit off and we'll work it out. Then download the barcode as SVG or PNG, or print a sheet of labels. It runs in your browser, so the numbers you enter never leave your computer.

8 digits make an EAN-8, 12 a UPC-A, 13 an EAN-13 and 14 an ITF-14 (carton) barcode. "Generate check digit" takes 7, 11, 12 or 13 digits and adds the last one.

Print a label sheet

In the print window choose 100% / Actual size (not "Fit to page") and margins None or Default. Your label sheet's packaging lists its columns, rows and margins. Print one sheet on plain paper first, hold it against a label sheet, and scan a barcode with your phone.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the number from the packaging, your supplier's price list or your GS1 account.
  2. Press "Check and make barcode". If the check digit is wrong you'll see the right one. If the number has no check digit yet, press "Generate check digit".
  3. Download the SVG for packaging artwork (it stays sharp at any size), or the PNG for a listing or document.
  4. For labels, press "Add to label sheet" (or check a batch and add the valid ones), set the paper, columns and rows to match your label stock, and print.

A valid check digit doesn't make it your GTIN

The check digit only catches typos. Any 12 digits can be given a valid check digit, so this tool can't tell you whether a number is registered, or who it belongs to. A real GTIN is assigned to one product by its brand owner, using a GS1 company prefix: a block of numbers a business licenses from its local GS1 office (see gs1.org).

Google Merchant Center needs that real number. Google's GTIN help page says not to guess or make one up, not to use the restricted (02, 04, 2) or coupon (05, 98, 99) ranges, and to make sure the check digit is present and correct. If you resell branded goods, use the number on the pack. If you make the product and it has no GTIN, don't invent one: Google has a way to say a product has no GTIN, covered in the guide linked below.

Google Shopping saying "Missing or incorrect GTIN"?

Google's GTIN page says products with a missing or incorrect GTIN may have limited visibility, and that a product which has a GTIN but doesn't submit it could be disapproved. Our free Merchant Center Check shows the issues a reviewer would flag on your store in about 60 seconds. If you'd rather we fixed it, Merchant Center Fix, done for you, corrects product data and feed errors on up to 50 products for US$99, with a before/after log.

Questions

Can I use a barcode from this tool on Google Shopping or in a shop?

Only if the number is the product's real GTIN: one its brand owner assigned from a GS1 company prefix, or the number printed on the pack you resell. This tool draws a barcode for any well-formed number, but it can't register a number or check who owns it. Google's GTIN help page (support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461) says not to guess or make up a GTIN.

How is a GTIN check digit calculated?

It's the GS1 mod-10 method. Starting from the digit just left of the check digit and moving left, multiply the digits by 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on, and add them up. The check digit is whatever brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. For 400638133393 the total is 89, so the check digit is 1 and the EAN-13 is 4006381333931.

Which barcode type should I use?

Use the type that matches the number: EAN-13 for 13-digit GTINs (most of the world), UPC-A for 12-digit GTINs (mainly the US and Canada), EAN-8 for small packs that were given an 8-digit GTIN, and ITF-14 for 14-digit GTINs on outer cartons. Code 128 is for your own stock codes on shelves and bins; it isn't a GTIN and shops won't recognise it as one.

Are my numbers uploaded or saved?

No. The checking and the barcode drawing run in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us or stored. We only count, anonymously, that the tool was used.

How big should a printed barcode be?

GS1's standard EAN-13 size is about 37 mm wide and 26 mm tall, and retail scanners are designed for roughly 80% to 200% of that, so keep EAN and UPC labels at least 30 mm wide. Print at 100% scale, use black bars on a white label, and scan a test sheet with your phone before printing a big batch.

What's the difference between UPC, EAN and GTIN?

GTIN is the family name. A UPC-A is a 12-digit GTIN (GTIN-12), an EAN-13 is a 13-digit GTIN (GTIN-13), EAN-8 is GTIN-8 and ITF-14 carries a GTIN-14. A UPC-A is the same number as an EAN-13 with a 0 in front, which is why the tool also shows each number padded to 14 digits.
